LAURENTIAN SINGERS PLAN CHRISTMAS CONCERTS
CANTON – St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers will perform
Christmas concerts in the community and on campus this season. All of
the events are open to the public, free of charge.
On Friday, December 5, the Laurentian Singers will perform a
concert and carol sing-along at the historic Trinity Chapel in Morley
at 7:30 p.m. The sing-along will follow the concert.
The Fourth Annual Christmas Concert and Caroling Party by the
Laurentian Singers will take place on Saturday, December 6, at 7 p.m.
in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus. Following the concert, where
the Laurentian Singers will be joined by the University Chorus, there
will be a carol sing and caroling throughout the campus and community.
The performances feature an eclectic mix of music for the
season, including:
- Classic Robert Shaw arrangements of traditional carols from
western Europe ("Fum, fum, fum," from Spain; "How unto Bethlehem,"
from Italy; "Good Christian Men," from Germany; "Lay down your staffs,"
from France; and "I saw three ships," from England)
- A performance of the motet Lobet den Herrn, a setting of
Psalm 117, "O praise the Lord, all ye nations," by J.S. Bach, performed
by the Laurentian Chamber Singers
- Ave Maria by Canadian composer David McIntyre, for six-part
women's chorus, performed by the Laurentian women
- Arrangements of well-known holiday songs by St. Lawrence music
faculty and students, such as Professor Emeritus Norman Hessert's Jolly
Old Canon in D, combining Pachelbel's Canon and "Jolly Old St. Nicholas,"
and "Away in a Manger"; Director Barry Torres' setting of Mel Torme's
"The Christmas Song" and "The Huron Carol"; and a setting of John
Lennon's "Happy Christmas" by Laurentian Singers Audrey Merriam '06
and Wendy Berner '06
Accompanist Barbara Phillips-Farley and Associate Professor
of Music Michael Farley, on saxophones, will be featured on two popular
Tin Pan Alley classics, "Silver Bells" and "Winter Wonderland." At
Saturday's concert, the University Chorus will sing several settings
of the chorale "Lo, how a rose 'ere blooming," from Hugo Distler's
"The Christmas Story," written in 1933.
