LAURENTIAN SINGERS PRESENT 'VICTORIAN CHRISTMAS' IN CONCERTS
CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers will present "A Victorian
Christmas" for their annual Christmas concert and carol sing-along, on Friday,
December 8, at 7 p.m. at the Edwards Opera House and on Saturday, December 9,
at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus. The campus
concert is open to the public, free of charge. The concert in Edwards is a fund-raiser
for the Edwards Opera House, and tickets are $8, at the door.
For the Edwards concert, the Laurentian Singers will be joined by the duo of
John Kribs and Gwen Tracy, and the Noteworthy Handbell Choir, of Potsdam.
Both performances will include a program of familiar and not-so-familiar music
for the season, from the time of Dickens and Hawthorne: "The Holly and the Ivy,"
"Deck the Halls," "Once in Royal David's City," "God Rest You Merry Gentlemen,"
"Carol of the Bells," "The First Noel" and "Wassail Song" are among the
selections.
The Laurentian Singers, a select coeducational choir, celebrated its 60th
anniversary this year. The group has won wide acclaim since the ensemble was
founded in 1946. In addition to their many performances on campus and in the
community, the ensemble has toured extensively throughout the eastern United
States, Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Romania and the former Soviet
Union. In recent years, they have toured in Puerto Rico and New Orleans,
singing for enthusiastic, packed audiences and meeting with other choirs.
In 2004, the Laurentians were invited to sing for U.S. Senator Hillary
Rodham Clinton (D-NY).
