LAURENTIAN SINGERS PRESENT SEASONAL CONCERTS

CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers have scheduled
two holiday concerts. On Friday, December 6, at 7:30 p.m. the Singers
will appear at the historic Trinity Chapel in Morley. The next evening,
Saturday, December 7, at 7 p.m. will find the Laurentians in Gunnison
Memorial Chapel on campus for their 3rd Annual Christmas Concert and
Caroling Party. Both events are open to the public and free of charge.
The music will be a mix of traditional English carols, Baroque
music and popular seasonal selections from the 30's and 40's. The major
work on the program will be a setting of the Magnificat by the late-
17th-cCentury Danish composer Dietrich Buxtehude. Several Laurentians will
be featured as soloists, along with two violinists and a cellist from the
Early Music Strings. In the Gunnison Chapel concert, the newly formed Early
Music Strings will play the Christmas Concerto in G minor, Op. 6 nr. 8, by
another 17th-century composer, Archangelo Corelli. Several traditional carols
such as "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day" and "The Holly and The Ivy" will be
sung along with the African-American spiritual "Go Tell It On the Mountain."
The Laurentians will premiere a new arrangement by retiring Professor of
Music Norman Hessert. His Jolly Old Canon in D combines the famous
Pachelbel Canon with "Jolly Old St. Nicholas" in a delightful way. The program
will end with a medley of swing-era holiday classics that will feature accompanist
Barbara Phillips-Farley at the piano and music department Chair Michael Farley on
tenor sax. "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "Let it Snow" will be
followed by an arrangement by Director Barry Torres of Mel Torme's "The
Christmas Song" ("chestnuts roasting on an open fire").
Following each concert will be a carol sing-along that will include
Jose Feliciano's "Feliz Navidad." Audience members at the December 7 concert are
invited to join the Laurentians after the concert as they carol through the
campus area.
