A List 3/18/02 LAURENTIAN SINGERS PRESENT POST-TOUR CONCERT ON CAMPUS CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers will perform in a post-tour concert on campus on Wednesday, March 27, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel; the event is open to the public, free of charge. During the University's spring break, the group toured New Mexico, performing in Santa Fe, Taos, Albuquerque and Los Alamos. The program consists of a wide variety of choral music reflecting the diverse backgrounds of the group's members. Music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras, including Handel's Coronation Anthem Let Thy Hand be Strengthened; Dido's lament from Purcell's Dido and Aeneas; and Tallis' anthem If ye love me will be heard. Several of the group's singers will be featured as soloists in arrangements of Carole King's A Natural Woman and Billy Joel's And So It Goes. The women will sing traditional songs from Bulgaria in the distinctive Balkan vocal style. A Gregorian chant and the spiritual If I Got My Ticket will be sung by the men. Other selections on the program will be Morton Lauridsen's setting of the poem Dirait-on by Rainer Maria Rilke; the King's Singers' signature encore You Are the New Day and a setting of This is My Song to the chorale from Jean Sibelius' Finlandia. The Laurentian Singers have won wide acclaim since the ensemble was founded in 1946. In addition to their many performances on campus and in the community, the 32-voice ensemble has toured extensively throughout the eastern United States and to Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe, Central and South America, Romania, and the former Soviet Union. The group's wide-ranging repertoire, drawn from musics of many styles and countries, reflects the spirit of the liberal arts experience at St. Lawrence. The choir is composed of undergraduate students who represent a wide variety of academic majors and interests. This year's members hail from 10 states across the U.S., as well as India, Kenya, Bulgaria and Russia. They are directed by Barry Torres, director of choral activities at St. Lawrence.
