SLU SENIOR SEEKS WOMEN'S 'FIRSTS' FOR BOOK PROJECT

CANTON -- It's said that women never forget the significant "firsts"
in their lives -- first crushes, first jobs, even their first bras.
A St. Lawrence University senior is seeking women's thoughts about those
memorable "firsts" for an honors project she hopes to turn into a published
book.
Sarah A. Long, of Bethesda, Maryland, is working on an English
honors project, an anthology of narratives, to be titled Female Firsts,
about growing up female. She is seeking contributions from women of all
ages about milestone experiences in their lives, including their first
menstrual period, first sexual experience, first diet, first kiss, first
date, first Pap smear, etc.
"This will be a compilation of stories expressing the female
coming-of-age experience," Long says. "I'd like it to be a guide, supporting
girls through these turbulent times in their lives. But mainly, Female Firsts
will give women a voice."
Long, who has already gathered some 100 submissions from ads she placed
in national magazines, plans to compile submissions through this academic year
and choose the best for the final piece, to be submitted to publishers for
consideration.
Submissions of between 500 and 3,000 words may be sent to:
Sarah A. Long, 88 Miner Street, Canton, NY 13617
