'Living With War' Topic Of Teach-In At St. Lawrence

CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Center for Civic Engagement and Leadership will hold a teach-in on "Living with War" on Friday, March 27, from noon to 4:30 p.m. in the Winston Room of the Student Center. The event, part of the Contemporary Issues Forum, is funded by the Alcoa Foundation Cultural Affairs Program Fund.

At 1:45 p.m., Assistant Professor of Performance and Communication Arts Ann Marie Gardinier Halstead will perform the monologue The Suitor's Ward, by Clay McLeon Chapman, inspired by Henryk Grynberg. She plays a World War II nurse who treats seriously wounded soldiers in the piece, directed by Chris Clarke. It was recently performed as part of Pendragon Theatre's "New Directions: An Evening of Short Plays," in Saranac Lake. Discussion will follow.

A panel discussion will be held at 2:30 p.m., on "Life After War," featuring Canton resident Nellie Coakley, a nurse, veteran and war trauma counselor affiliated with the St. Lawrence County Veterans Center Program. Her presentation will be followed by a panel of Iraqi war veterans and their families, sharing their stories about what they have faced and continue to face in life after war.

A lunch-time panel discussion will also be held, on the transition from military to civilian life, featuring Marine Corps veterans.

The Contemporary Issues Forum brings experts and participants in the making of news to campus throughout the academic year.
