NEW BOOK FROM SLU EDITORS LOOKS AT LIFE IN NORTH COUNTRY



CANTON - Works from a variety of local writers are gathered in the new 

book Living North Country: Essays on Life and Landscapes in Northern 

New York, edited by St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of English 

Natalia R. Singer and University Editor Neal S. Burdick.

	Published by North Country Books, Inc., of Utica, it includes more 

than two dozen essays, by established writers as well as newcomers, all of 

whom have ties to the local area. Authors included, in addition to Singer 

and Burdick, are John W. Van de Water, William Gadway, Elizabeth Inness-Brown, 

Alice Paden Green, Tam Lin Neville, Jim Gould, Mary Blake, Betsy Tisdale, 

Peter Van de Water, Karen M. Johnson-Weiner, Peter J. Bailey, Joan Potter, 

Constance Jenkins, Jonathan Mairs, Tom Van de Water, Homer Mitchell, Lynn 

Case Ekfelt, Chris Angus, Bill McKibben, Peter Owens, Ken Lawless, Roger 

Mitchell, Harry W. Paige, Arthur L. Johnson, Heather Allison-Jenkins, 

Shirley McFerson, Maurice Kenny, Carolyn Boggs and Randall T.G. Hill.

	According to the publishers, "Between these covers are open spaces, 

small towns, skeletons in the closets, blue skies, big storms and more - all 

in a region that has never been quite sure how to define itself."

	Singer has published a number of short stories and has written for 

national magazines. Burdick, in addition to editing publications for 

St. Lawrence, is the editor of Adirondac magazine and writes frequently 

about the Adirondack region.
