A List 1/27/03 'LINES OF MIGRATION' PAINTINGS IN EXHIBITION IN SLU GALLERY CANTON - Paintings by Kenwyn Crichlow and Obiora Udechukwu, in an exhibition titled "Lines of Migration," will be in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University through February 22. It is part of the 2003 Festival of the Arts at the University, titled "The Gullah Connection: From West Africa to the Islands of the Americas." A discussion with the artists and reception will be on Tuesday, February 4, at 7 p.m. in the gallery. Crichlow is a native of Trinidad. He is a lecturer and coordinator of the visual arts programs offered at the Centre for Creative and Festival Arts at the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. Crichlow has exhibited his work in group and one-person shows in Canada, the U.S., Europe and throughout the Caribbean. Of his work, Crichlow states, "People in Trinidad of African descent make things - much of this making comes out of the ramagé process, which is a way of improvising, of getting in touch with other areas of knowledge through time. My way of making a painting is informed by the ramagé process, which is part of the whole way of identification. I am informed by the discourse about identities." Dana Professor of Fine Arts Udechukwu is from Nigeria. Prior to coming to St. Lawrence in the fall of 1997, Udechukwu was professor of drawing and painting at the University of Nigeria, where he received his B.A. and M.F.A. in painting. Internationally known, he has exhibited work in a number of countries, including the National Museum of African Art at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. He states, "Although I have my Nigerian heritage, I've been living in the United States for five years, and you can't exist as an island here. You have to be part of the society where you live; all kinds of things impinge on your life. How do you rationalize these things; how do you come to terms with your present position? There's a lot of ambivalence in my practice now as an artist." "Lines of Migration" will also be on exhibition April 8 through 30 at Gallery 1.2.3.4. at The Normandie, St. Ann's, Trinidad, and May 23 through June 20 at artspace, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada.
