LIBANA AT SLU FOR CONCERT & SOLSTICE CELEBRATION

CANTON – Libana, a group that performs women's traditional and contemporary
music and dance from around the globe, will perform in concert at
St. Lawrence University on Saturday, December 13, at 7 p.m. in Gunnison
Memorial Chapel. In addition, Libana will perform at the University's
third annual Winter Solstice Ceremony, to take place on Friday, December
12, at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. Both events are open to the
public, free of charge, but those attending are asked to bring non-perishable
food items, for donation to local food pantries.
Libana takes its name from a 10th-century Moorish poet and musician,
a symbol of women's creativity throughout time. The group was founded by its
artistic director, Susan Robbins, in 1979 with the idea of exploring and
performing pieces that reflect women's often undocumented musical heritage.
For the past 22 years, they have taken audiences on many a musical journey,
weaving together the songs, dances and instrumental music of the world's
cultures, especially as handed down through the artistic traditions of women.
Their repertoire of ancient melodies and contemporary tunes is
performed a cappella and with a vast array of instruments, and with origins
from across the Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Middle East, Europe, Africa,
Asia and South America.
North Country Public Radio is media sponsor for the concert.
