Laurentian Singers Concert At SLU March 19

CANTON - Following their "Senior Hometown Sweep" tour, St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers will perform in concert on campus on Friday, March 19, at 8 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

The Singers are joined by students taking the spring semester music class "Isn't It Romantic?", which explores the art of song from both a popular and classical perspective. The first half of the concert features music of 19th century masters - Brahms, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Wagner - and Stephen Foster, including Beautiful Dreamer and O Susannah. The Laurentian Singers Radio Hour, in the second half, uses the format of a 1930's radio variety show, with songs from stage and screen including Fats Waller's Ain't Misbehavin', Johnny Mercer's Laura, Cole Porter's Night and Day and the Andrews Sisters' Boogey Woogey Bugle Boy.

During spring break, the Laurentian Singers toured the hometown region of the senior members of the group, including stops in Syracuse, Rochester, New York and Massachusetts.

The Laurentian Singers, a select coeducational choir of 26 undergraduate singers, has maintained a wide-ranging repertoire throughout its 64-year history, drawn from musics of many styles and countries, reflecting the spirit of the liberal arts experience at St. Lawrence. The Laurentian Singers includes undergraduate students who represent a variety of academic majors and interests. They are directed by Barry Torres.
