Laurentian Singers' Holiday Concert & Carol Sing December 3 and 4
CANTON - The Laurentian Singers 11th annual Holiday Concert and Carol Sing will be on Friday, December 3, at 7 p.m. in the Russell Opera House and on Saturday, December 4, at 2 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel on campus at St. Lawrence University. Both are open to the public, free of charge.
"Joyeux Noel"is the theme for the concert's first half, featuring o French music of the season, including the Christmas cantata In nativitatem Domini canticum by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, composer to the Sun King, Louis XIV of 17th-centry France. The Singers will be joined by strings of the Northern Lights Orchestra and flutist Laura Rediehs.
The concert's second half has the theme "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and features popular American Christmas songs, including "Christmastime is Here," from " A Charlie Brown Christmas"; "The Christmas Song" ("Chestnuts roasting on an open fire..."); Irving Berlin's "White Christmas"; and "I'll Be Home for Christmas," which was composed by Class of 1924 St. Lawrence graduate J. Kimball Gannon. A sing-along follows, featuring more Christmas hits, such as "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," "Winter Wonderland" and traditional carols.
Barry Torres directs the Laurentian Singers; Barbara Phillips-Farley is accompanist.
The Laurentian Singers is a select coeducational choir of 24 undergraduate St. Lawrence students, celebrating its 65th anniversary this year.
