Laurentian Singers Holiday Concert December 2
CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers present their 10th Annual Christmas Concert and Carol Sing, featuring Handel's Messiah: Part 1 - The Birth, on Wednesday, December 2, at 7 p.m. in Gunnison Memorial Chapel. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
The Laurentian Singers will perform the Christmas section from the most popular and longest-running musical theater piece in history, Handel's Messiah. Since its composition in 1741, Messiah has been performed every year to audiences all over the world. Its timeless message about the life of Christ and what it has meant to humanity, told through bold and dramatic musical settings of Biblical texts, still powerfully reaches audiences today. The famous "Hallelujah Chorus," from Part 2, will provide a rousing conclusion.
The Laurentians will present Messiah in a spirited "Baroque" fashion, accompanied by a small "Handelian" orchestra of strings, harpsichord, oboe, bassoon and trumpets. Solos will be sung by tenors Mitch Galli '12, Joe Cambareri '13 and Matthew Bartolotti '13; altos Dorothea Ehrhardt '10, Beth Dixon '10, Rebecca Ernst '10 and Jessica Welch '13; sopranos Caroline Bishop '10, Haley Feickert '11 and Jacqui Cooper '11; and bass James Perconti '10.
Following the concert the Singers invite the audience to join in a carol sing of traditional favorites of the season.
The Laurentian Singers, a select coeducational choir founded in 1946, is directed by Barry Torres and accompanied by Barbara Phillips-Farley. For more information, contact the music department at 315-229-5184.
