SLU's Laurentian Singers Offer Hispanic, American Music For The Season
CANTON - St. Lawrence University's Laurentian Singers will perform two concerts of Hispanic and American music for the season, titled "Navidad Nuestra." Performances will be Friday, December 2, at 7:30 p.m. at the Russell Opera House and Saturday, December 3, at 2 p.m. in Peterson-Kermani Peformance Hall on campus. Both are open to the public, free of charge.
The featured work on the program is Navidad Nuestra, an Argentine folk Christmas pageant in music by Ariel Ramirez. Through six colorful songs based on different Argentine folk dance rhythms, Ramirez tells the Christmas story from the angel Gabriel's greeting of Mary, through the journey to Bethlehem, the Nativity, the shepherds' and the kings' celebrations and finally the flight to Egypt. Joining the Laurentians will be guest artists Kevin Irwin on guitar and percussionists Kyle Tupper and Zack Browning.
The program also includes American music for the season and two Spanish Renaissance Christmas villancicos (madrigals).
The audience will be asked to join in a carol sing of seasonal favorites.
The Laurentian Singers, a select coeducational choir of undergraduate singers, has maintained a wide-ranging repertoire throughout its 65-year history, drawn from musics of many styles and countries, reflecting the spirit of the liberal arts experience at St. Lawrence.
