LAURENTIAN SINGERS PLAN CHRISTMAS CONCERT OF POPS AND TRADITIONAL MUSIC
CANTON -The Laurentian Singers of St. Lawrence University will perform their 6th Annual
Christmas Concert and Carol Sing at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 3, in Gunnison
Memorial Chapel on campus. The concert is open to the public at no charge.
Director Barry Torres plans a program of Christmas music from the 30's and 40's, as well as
more recent selections and a few traditional favorites, including the "Hallelujah" chorus from
Handel's Messiah. Also featured on the program are:
. "Christmas Time is Here," the famous song from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" and is being
sung in an arrangement by Professor of Music Emeritus Norman Hessert.
. "I'll Be Home for Christmas" is the WWII hit by St. Lawrence alumnus J. Kimball Gannon '24.
. "Happy Christmas (War is Over)" is being sung in an arrangement by current Laurentian
Singers Audrey Merriam '06 and Wendy Berner '06
. Two pieces on the theme of comfort and rest, including Canadian composer Healey Willan's
setting of the Laurence Housman poem "The Three Kings" and Eric Whitacre's "Sleep," originally
a setting of Robert Frost's Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, but reset to
words of peace and rest.
Associate Professor of Music Michael Farley will join the Laurentians with some stylish
swing-style saxophone and pianist Barbara Phillips-Farley will accompany the chorus.
