When Economists Disagree: SLU Speaker Examines Theories
CANTON - "The Class of Economic Ideas" is the topic for a talk by Lawrence H. White, of the economics department at George Mason University, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.
Economists famously disagree about economic policy. White will talk about the people and theories behind those disagreements, presenting highlights from his new book, also titled The Clash of Economic Ideas. He will discuss how historical events have framed the debates among economists, and how the ideas of academic writers have inspired major experiments in economic policy. White will offer perspectives on laissez-faire and socialism; economic development and growth, with special attention to Germany and India; the transformation of our monetary system from the gold standard to the paper standard; fiscal policy; and today's sovereign debt crises.
White specializes in the theory and history of banking and money. He is the author of The Theory of Monetary Institutions, Free Banking in Britain and Competition and Currency. In 2008 he received the Distinguished Scholar Award of the Association for Private Enterprise Education. White is a co-editor of Econ Journal Watch and a member of the board of associate editors of the Review of Austrian Economics. He is a contributing editor to the Foundation for Economic Education's magazine The Freeman and an adjunct scholar of the Cato Institute.
