RECITAL AT SLU TO FEATURE IVES, BRAHMS, TIN PAN ALLEY

CANTON – Mezzo-soprano Rebecca Lanning will perform music by Charles Ives,
Johannes Brahms, George and Ira Gershwin and "Tin Pan Alley" composers in
recital at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, October 23, at 8 p.m. in
Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. The event is the Gretchen Bence
Young Artist Recital, and is open to the public, free of charge.
Lanning received degrees in voice and continued with post-graduate
studies in music history at Ohio University. She received her operatic training
from Metropolitan Opera baritone Edward Thomas Payne. An active singer, Lanning
has performed in recitals and on the concert stage throughout the United
States and in Europe. In 2002, she was a national semi-finalist in the National
Association of Teachers of Singing Artist Auditions, where she received the
Irvin Bushman Award. Lanning was a member of Robert Shaw's Chamber Singers and
Festival Singers, and performed with him several times at Carnegie Hall. Recent
appearances include the Béla Bartók Symposium, the Birmingham Museum of Modern
Art and the Macon Symphony Orchestra. She is head of the music department and
director of the Chamber Singers at Macon State College.
Lanning will also conduct a workshop while participating in Bence Weekend.
The Young Artists Series was established by contributions from the family and
friends of Gretchen Bence, a 1950 graduate of St. Lawrence and a professional
opera singer, following her receipt of an honorary degree from St. Lawrence
in 1985.
