'LANGUAGE OF COMICS' EXHIBITION IN SLU'S BRUSH GALLERY
CANTON - "The Language of Comics," an exhibition of original drawings from Jessica
Abel's La Perdida and Matt Madden's 99 Ways to Tell A Story: Exercises
in Style - both
graphic novels - is on exhibition in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at
St. Lawrence University through Wednesday, May 2.
Madden will present a slide lecture and discussion on Thursday, April 19, at 7 p.m.
in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center. It is open to the public, free of charge.
Abel is the author of Soundtrack and Mirror, Window, two collections of stories
and drawings from her comic book, Artbabe. Her graphic novel La Perdida, which
tells the story of a young woman's misadventures and her desire to live an authentic
life, won the 2002 Harvey Award for Best New Series. She is currently collaborating
on another graphic novel, Life Sucks, and is finishing up a textbook about making
comics with Madden. She teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Madden started self-publishing minicomics in the early 1990s. He created the graphic
novels Black Candy in 1998 and Odds Off in 2001. 99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises
in Style was published in 2005 by Penguin Books and Madden's latest comics appear
in A Fine Mess, a series published by Alternative Comics. Madden teaches at the
School of Visual Arts and reviews comics for Bookforum.
