A List 2/14/05 PRESENTATION AT SLU ON 'KYOTO PROTOCOL' CANTON – St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Jon Rosales will lead a presentation, with students, on the topic "The Kyoto Protocol Comes Into Force: So What?" on Wednesday, February 16, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium (Room 218) of Hepburn Hall. The event is open to the public, free of charge. In 1997, more than 160 nations met in Kyoto, Japan, to negotiate binding limitations on greenhouse gases for the developed nations, pursuant to the objectives of the Framework Convention on Climate Change of 1992. The outcome of the meeting was the Kyoto Protocol, in which the developed nations agreed to limit their greenhouse gas emissions, relative to the levels emitted in 1990. The United States agreed to reduce emissions from 1990 levels by 7 percent during the period 2008 to 2012. Rosales and students in his Climate Change Policy and Advocacy class are noting the significance of the date, February 16, 2005, as the day the Kyoto Protocol comes into force. The class attended the 10th Conference of Parties (COP 10) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in December of 2004. At the presentation, Rosales will talk about the Kyoto Protocol process and students will report on their experiences and observations. -30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
