LIVE CONCERT & DIGITAL DEMO SET FOR SLU 'KEYBOARD WEEKEND'

CANTON – Virtuoso pianist Daniel Koppelman, a faculty member at Furman
University in Greenville, South Carolina, will be in residence at St. Lawrence
University Friday and Saturday, October 8 and 9, for the music department's
annual Hutchison Keyboard Weekend, to include both a concert and a
lecture/demonstration.
Both events deal with the intersection of live performance and digital
technology. Koppelman's performing interests include the use of real-time
controllers (such as MIDI keyboards) to interact with intelligent software
systems – effectively allowing a computer to "listen" to his playing and
respond with its own musical line. He will also perform pieces that feature
signal-processing of acoustic piano sounds, as well as pieces for piano
and tape and for solo piano.
The concert is on Friday, October 8, at 8 p.m. in Gilbert Recital
Hall, Griffiths Arts Center. On Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m., also in
Gilbert Recital Hall, Koppelman will give a lecture/demonstration,
allowing audience members to see "up close" how these technological tools
work. Both are open to the public, free of charge.
For more information, contact Christopher Watts in the music
department, 315-229-5138.
