Artist Kimberly Mayhorn To Premiere Work At St. Lawrence

CANTON - Multi-media artist Kimberly Mayhorn will be in residence at St. Lawrence University March 2 through 4, presenting workshops and the premiere of a performance piece called "Reactance."

"Reactance" is an audiovisual installation with live art that explores a black woman's biographical memory and her journey of stepping outside the mental "boxes" that she has created. It will be presented on Thursday, March 4, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Mayhorn will also conduct two open workshops:

Tuesday, March 2, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 109 of the E.J. Noble University Center, "Inside/Outside," where participants "will play with making the invisible visible and explore fun and participatory ways of stepping outside of the box."

Wednesday, March 3, 4:30 to 6 p.m. in Room 109 of the E.J. Noble University Center, "Stepping Outside the Box: Movement Workshop." Mayhorn and performer Dai Jian will lead participants in movements that play with heightening awareness of space and time and explore ways to cultivate a deeper understanding of self.

Selected by Essence magazine as one of "30 Women to Watch," Mayhorn is an artist whose works encompass installation, video and theatre. She worked as a video editor for over 10 years, and in 1998 began creating installations. Her first solo show, "A Woman Was Lynched the Other Day…," has been exhibited throughout the country. Other works include "small pieces of carbon," an installation about "blood diamonds" in Sierra Leone; "Black Boxisms: Visiting Room"; and "Home Speech," created for the Open Studios exhibition of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
