SLU PROFESSOR AWARDED FELLOWSHIP FOR STUDY IN INDIA

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University Visiting Assistant Professor of 
Religious Studies M. Whitney Kelting has been awarded a senior fellowship 
by the American Institute of Indian Studies, to support seven to eight 
months of study in India during 2001-2002. 
	Kelting will conduct research on the topic of Jain women and 
narratives about sati. A graduate of Colby College, with a master's degree 
and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Kelting has been a 
member of the St. Lawrence faculty since 1997.
	The American Institute of Indian Studies is a consortium of 
universities and colleges in the United States at which scholars actively 
engage in teaching and research about India. The Institute provides 
fellowship support for senior American scholars and Ph.D. candidates; 
offers on-site training in Indian languages; publishes scholarly work 
and sponsors conferences.
	Jainism includes the belief that the universe and all its substances 
or entities are eternal. Sati is the Hindu custom whereby the widow was 
immolated on the funeral pyre of her husband during his cremation.
