A List 9/9/02 KEENE, MASLOW, TAYLOR AWARDS GIVEN AT SLU CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received awards for outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus August 29, marking the start of the academic year. Professor of English J. Kerr Grant received the J. Calvin Keene Award; Head of Reference/Instructional Services Joan A. Larsen was given the Louis and Frances Maslow Award; and Rene M. Murphy, manager of microcomputer user services, information technology, received the John P. Taylor Award. The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a faculty member in recognition of "high standards of personal scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern." Presenting the award to Grant, Vice President of the University and Dean of Academic Affairs Grant H. Cornwell said that he is "the consummate colleague and University citizen" and noting that "students value him as a generous and extremely supportive advisor, praising his forthright advice and respecting the years of University experience he brings to bear when discussing their futures." Grant has been a faculty member at St. Lawrence since 1977. The Maslow Award goes to the faculty member who has shown "the most interest in and understanding of the education and welfare of the student body as a whole." Cornwell said that Larsen is "one of the community's stalwart citizens. She cares so much about St. Lawrence - about the integrity of its mission, about the education of its students, about the quality of the community - that she gives of herself untiringly." He noted especially her involvement with the First-Year Program, the Joint Board of Inquiry and the Residence Life Committee. Larsen became a member of the University faculty in 1977. The John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service Award was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining services director, recognizing distinguished service to the University by an administrator who has worked at least 12 years at St. Lawrence and who sustains the high standards of performance exemplified by Taylor. Presenting the award, President Daniel F. Sullivan said that Murphy is "a person who is unfailingly responsive, a 'can-do' person in every area of her responsibility, unbelievably focused and helpful in a job that often involves great stress, smart, savvy, a team player devoted to St. Lawrence, and someone who has grown tremendously in my time here with every new opportunity."
