KEENE, MASLOW, TAYLOR AWARDS GIVEN AT SLU

CANTON -- St. Lawrence University faculty and staff received
awards for outstanding service at Convocation, held on campus
August 29, marking the start of the academic year.
Professor of English J. Kerr Grant received the J. Calvin Keene
Award; Head of Reference/Instructional Services Joan A. Larsen was
given the Louis and Frances Maslow Award; and Rene M. Murphy,
manager of microcomputer user services, information technology,
received the John P. Taylor Award.
The Keene Award was established in 1975 and is given to a
faculty member in recognition of "high standards of personal
scholarship, effective teaching and moral concern." Presenting
the award to Grant, Vice President of the University and Dean
of Academic Affairs Grant H. Cornwell said that he is "the
consummate colleague and University citizen" and noting that
"students value him as a generous and extremely supportive
advisor, praising his forthright advice and respecting the
years of University experience he brings to bear when discussing
their futures." Grant has been a faculty member at St. Lawrence
since 1977.
The Maslow Award goes to the faculty member who has
shown "the most interest in and understanding of the education
and welfare of the student body as a whole." Cornwell said that
Larsen is "one of the community's stalwart citizens. She cares
so much about St. Lawrence - about the integrity of its mission,
about the education of its students, about the quality of the
community - that she gives of herself untiringly." He noted
especially her involvement with the First-Year Program, the
Joint Board of Inquiry and the Residence Life Committee. Larsen
became a member of the University faculty in 1977.
The John P. "Jack" Taylor Distinguished Career Service
Award was established in 1995 at Taylor's retirement as dining
services director, recognizing distinguished service to the
University by an administrator who has worked at least 12 years
at St. Lawrence and who sustains the high standards of
performance exemplified by Taylor. Presenting the award, President
Daniel F. Sullivan said that Murphy is "a person who is
unfailingly responsive, a 'can-do' person in every area of her
responsibility, unbelievably focused and helpful in a job that
often involves great stress, smart, savvy, a team player devoted
to St. Lawrence, and someone who has grown tremendously in my
time here with every new opportunity." Murphy is a resident of
Ogdensburg and was recently promoted to her current position.
