KIRK DOUGLAS '39 TO SPEAK AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON -- Motion picture legend Kirk Douglas, who graduated from
St. Lawrence University in 1939, will return to his alma mater on
September 16, for a public presentation. The visit marks only the
second time that he will have come to the Canton campus since his
graduation; Douglas visited in 1958, when he received an honorary
doctoral degree.
The public event, which will include his reminiscences of
St. Lawrence, will be held at noon in Gulick Theatre. Free tickets
are required for admission. Tickets will be available to students,
faculty and staff beginning September 7 at the E.J. Noble University
Center main desk and to the community beginning September 10 at the
St. Lawrence Bookstore.
Douglas grew up in Amsterdam, New York, and graduated from
St. Lawrence with a degree in English. While a student here, he was
president of the student government organization and a member of the
wrestling team and German club. He also participated in dramatics,
and went on to a distinguished career on the stage and screen.
He has appeared in over 80 films, including classics such
as Spartacus, Lonely Are The Brave, Lust For Life and Gunfight
At The OK Corral. Douglas' 85th film, Diamonds, is scheduled
to open later this year.
Douglas received an honorary Academy Award in 1995, and earlier
this year, he was named one of the 50 greatest screen legends of all
time by the American Film Institute. In conjunction with his appearance
at St. Lawrence, three of Douglas' films are being shown on campus:
Monday, September 13, Lust For Life; Tuesday, September 14, Paths Of
Glory; and Wednesday, September 15, Lonely Are The Brave. All film
showings are at 7:30 p.m. in Gulick Theatre and will be followed by
faculty-led discussions.
