SLU Hosting Talk On Modern Thai Buddhism

CANTON - A talk titled "The Patron Saint of Bangkok: Magic, Mantras and Talismans in Modern Thai Buddhism" will be given by Justin McDaniel, associate professor of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall. The event, supported by the Freeman Foundation, is open to the public, free of charge.

McDaniel is president of the Thailand-Laos-Cambodia Studies Group of the Association for Asian Studies and creator of the Thai Digital Monastery Project, a Web site with information about Thai Buddhist monasteries in Thailand and elsewhere.

His book, Gathering Leaves and Lifting Words: Histories of Monastic Education in Laos and Thailand, was published by the University of Washington Press in 2008.
