SLU Environmental Studies Prof To Give Talk On Climate-Change Actions

CANTON - St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies Jon Rosales, who has participated in a number of climate-change conferences, will give a talk titled "From Copenhagen to Bonn: Are We Any Closer to a Resolution That Achieves Climate Justice?" on Thursday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Eben Holden on campus. The event, part of the Contemporary Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.

At the Stockholm Summit in 1972, representatives from countries around the world met to lay out principles for action on environment and development, principles intended to resolve the tension between the environmental concerns of the Northern Hemisphere and the development concerns of the Southern Hemisphere. Almost 40 years later, at the Copenhagen conference on climate change, new proposals where on the table to address this tension. The next climate conference in Bonn, Germany, in June of 2010, will be another moment when history calls upon government leaders to develop a plan that achieves climate stabilization and environmental justice.

A graduate of the University of Minnesota, Rosales holds a master's degree in economics from Mankato State University, a master's degree in public affairs from the Humphrey Institute at the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in conservation biology from the University of Minnesota. He is the author of numerous journal articles related to environmental affairs, most with a focus on climate change. Rosales' current research focuses on the ethics of the United Nations' climate-change policy; the impact of climate change on traditional and subsistence foods in Alaska; and preservation of old-growth forests.

The Contemporary Issues Forum brings experts and participants in the making of news to campus throughout the academic year.
