Johnson is the president of the Johnson Newspaper Corporation, and editor and publisher of the Watertown Daily Times. Johnson, a long-time supporter of St. Lawrence, and members of his family have many connections to the University and have been involved with St. Lawrence in a variety of ways. He was elected to St. Lawrence's Board of Trustees in 1950 and was elected trustee emeritus in 1987; his father, Harold B. Johnson, was a trustee until his death in 1949. John Johnson Sr.'s wife, Catherine Common Johnson, is a 1935 graduate of the University; his daughter-in-law, Susan MacDonald Johnson, is a member of the Class of 1966 and is currently a trustee. "Three generations of my family have served as trustees, beginning with my father, then my tenure and now Susan. The University and my newspaper have nurtured Northern New Yorkers seeking education and self-improvement, encouraging and pushing them to succeed despite our environment. The success of each institution depends upon the other." President Daniel F. Sullivan said, "I am deeply grateful for the long and continuing support that John Johnson Sr. has shown to St. Lawrence both through his many years of involvement with the University and now, through this generous gift. He is deeply committed in his concern for and interest in the North Country and St. Lawrence. This expression of his support ensures that commitment into the future, and for that I know I join with the University community in conveying our deepest, most heartfelt thanks to him and his great family."-30- Back To News Releases
