Named Professorships Go To Johns, Erlichman At SLU
CANTON - St. Lawrence University Associate Professor of
Environmental Studies Carolyn Johns has
been named to the Grace Fippinger Endowed Professorship in Science and Associate
Professor of Biology Joseph S. Erlichman
has been named to the R. Sheldon '68 and
Virginia H. Johnson Professorship in the Sciences.
Johns earned her bachelor's degree from Colby College and the Ph.D. from the
University of Montana. She teaches courses in air and water pollution; sustainable
agriculture; and environmental backlash; her research = much of which is
done on the St. Lawrence River - focuses on the uptake of heavy metals by
bivalves in freshwater ecosystems. Johns presents this work annually at
meetings of the Society for Ecological Toxicology and Contamination and has
published it in major scientific journals on the Great Lakes.
Erlichman earned both his bachelor's degree and master's degree at the University
of Colorado at Boulder, and the Ph.D. from Dartmouth Medical School. Erlichman
offers courses in comparative vertebrate morphology and human biology, while
his current area of research is the brain's glial cells, which in the past
have been little studied. Erlichman is investigating how the cells provide
metabolic support to neurons and modulate their activity. Often, St. Lawrence
students are involved in his research and he has frequently co-authored
articles in journals with students.
