Speaker At SLU To Address Fairness & Needs In Free Enterprise Economy
CANTON - Economist John Garen will give a talk titled "On Fairness and Needs in a Free Enterprise Economy" on Thursday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall, Room 218. The event, part of the economics department's visiting speaker series in political economy and the University's Contemporary Issues Forum, is open to the public, free of charge.
Some critics of free enterprise charge that the private sector does not take into account issues of "needs" and "fairness." But Garen says that the sector includes formal and informal non-profit institutions whose goals may include addressing the "needs" of others. These organizations face a variety of economic problems, and employ a number of practices to overcome them, providing a useful contrast with public-sector charity programs.
Garen is Gatton Endowed Professor of Economics at the University of Kentucky. His research focuses on the economics of incentive systems; economic organization; and labor and human resource economics. He has co-authored a number of articles with Brian E. Chezum, R. Sheldon '68 and Virginia H. Johnson Associate Professor of Economics at St. Lawrence.
