St. Lawrence Student Awarded Fulbright Teaching Assistantship

CANTON - St. Lawrence University senior Joanna Fassett, of Adams Center, has been awarded an English Teaching Assistantship from the Institute of International Education, the Fulbright Program. She will be teaching English in India for nine months through the program.

Fassett, a graduate of South Jefferson Central School, studied in India in the fall semester of 2008, through St. Lawrence's International and Intercultural Studies Program. She is a philosophy major, with a minor in Asian studies, and is a member of the national academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa.

The English Teaching Assistant Program, a component of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, places U.S. students, primarily new college graduates, as English teaching assistants in schools or universities overseas, where they increase foreign students' English language abilities and knowledge of the United States. They are integrated in the host community, which improves their own foreign language skills and knowledge of the host country. English Teaching Assistants also pursue individual study/research plans in addition to their teaching responsibilities.

Fassett is also a member of the philosophy honor society and recently won the department's 2010 Kathryn Fraser Mackay Award, which goes to the outstanding philosophy major.
