SLU AWARDED $135,000 GRANT FOR SCIENCE FACILITIES

CANTON - St. Lawrence University has been awarded a $135,000 grant by the J.M. McDonald Foundation, for the Johnson Hall of Science.

The grant will also assist the University in securing $1 million from the Kresge Foundation, which issued a challenge to St. Lawrence, to raise over $4.1 million in new gifts and pledges for the project.

St. Lawrence's largest construction project ever, the $36.9 million Johnson Hall of Science is scheduled to open in the fall of 2007. The 130,000-square-foot project includes modern, spacious state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, collaborative research, laboratories and offices.

University President Daniel F. Sullivan stated, "For the past three decades, the J.M. McDonald Foundation has supported several St. Lawrence initiatives that, taken together, illustrate the complexities of delivering a high quality liberal arts education. This most recent grant will not only assist us in meeting our Kresge Challenge, it will help us with the final stages of construction on the largest building project in our history, bringing us that much closer to a new level of science education - one that is distinguished by extensive hands-on investigative research, interdisciplinary endeavors, and state-of-the-art technology."

The J.M. McDonald Foundation, based in Evergreen, Colorado, has awarded St. Lawrence four previous grants: $20,000 in 1979 for the library building fund; $50,000 in 1994 for equipment and furnishing of a computer classroom in Valentine Hall; $50,000 in 1997 for the McDonald Technology for Teaching project; and $50,000 in 2001 for the Advantage Saints Emerson Challenge, to help with funding athletic facilities.

In the spring of 1952, J.M. McDonald established the J.M. McDonald Foundation, Inc., a trust whose income is to be used as donations to deserving charities. Primary interests of the Foundation are education, humanities, health, and a variety of social and human services.
