A List 3/5/01 BOOK BY SLU PROFESSOR EXAMINES CANADA'S MILITARY CANTON -- The Canadian Forces: Hard Choices, Soft Power, an examination of Canada's military forces by St. Lawrence University Professor of Canadian Studies Joseph T. Jockel, has been published by the Canadian Institute of Strategic Studies. The publication of the book will be celebrated by the Friends of Owen D. Young and Launders Libraries at St. Lawrence on Friday, March 23, at 4 p.m. in Owen D. Young Library. Jockel will speak about the book at the event, which is open to the public. In the book, Jockel analyzes how budget cuts and policy changes have affected the readiness of the Canadian military, especially in a time of increasing demand. It has already created a great deal of controversy in Canada. The National Post published a review of the book and its assertion that the Canadian military could not achieve the federal government's own objectives, due to budget cuts in recent years. The review drew subsequent comment from Canada's defense minister, among others, as well as a number of appearances in the national media for Jockel, a 1974 graduate of St. Lawrence and director of the Canadian Studies Program, which celebrates its 20th year at the University this year. The Canadian Institute for Strategic Studies is a non-profit research organization that examines defense, security and foreign-policy matters. Jockel has written several other books, including Canada and International Peacekeeping, and many articles on Canada-U.S. relations, and he has served as a consultant to the U.S. government on Canadian affairs. He is a senior associate of the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C., and director of its Canada Project. He is a former Fulbright Fellow in War Studies at the Royal Military College of Canada and has also held fellowships at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, NATO, the Government of Canada's Canadian Studies Program and the Council on Foreign Relations.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
