A List 1/29/01 JEFFERSON DESCENDANTS DISCUSS 'AFFAIRS OF RACE' AT SLU CANTON -- Shay Banks-Young and Julia Jefferson, two descendants of Thomas Jefferson and his slave, Sally Hemings, will give a presentation titled "The Affairs of Race in America: A Conversation in Black and White" at St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, February 6, at 7 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The event is open to the public, free of charge, but tickets are required for admission. They are available at Brewer Bookstore and the main desk of the E.J. Noble University Center on campus. Recent genetic testing strongly suggests that Jefferson fathered children with Hemings. Two men believed to be their sons were the great-great-grandfathers of the two women who are giving the presentation. Julie Jefferson, a former educator, is white, while Banks-Young, a preventive health trainer and public affairs talk-show host, is black. In their presentation, they will talk about the many similarities and differences they share, and engage the audience in a discussion of racial issues in America.
