TALK ON JAPANESE LITERATURE SLATED AT ST. LAWRENCE

CANTON – J. Thomas Rimer, professor of Japanese literature, theatre and art 
at the University of Pittsburgh, will give a talk titled "Why Should Americans 
Read Japanese Literature: Some Reflections from 30 Years of Teaching" at 
St. Lawrence University on Thursday, March 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Room 123 of 
the Griffiths Arts Center. It is open to the public, free of charge.
	Rimer is one of the best-known American translators of Japanese 
literature and culture, and his list of publications is extensive. In 
addition to authoring numerous books and articles, including A Reader's 
Guide to Japanese Literature and A Guide to Japanese Poetry, he served as 
the American curator of the Japanese Theatre in the World exhibit shown at 
the Japan Society in New York and at the Museum Villa Stuck in Munich, 
Germany. Rimer has been awarded the Order of the Sacred Treasure from the 
Consul General of Japan and has received the Chancellor's Distinguished 
Research Award from the University of Pittsburgh.
