Canoe Authority James Raffan To Give Talk At SLU

CANTON - James Raffan, executive director of the Canadian Canoe Museum and an authority on canoes and the wilderness experience, will give a talk titled "National Treasure: Canoes, Canada and the Wonders of the Canadian Canoe Museum" on Tuesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m. in Herring-Cole at St. Lawrence University. The event is open to the public, free of charge.

Focusing on the canoe in North American history and culture, Raffan's talk will cover topics ranging from the earliest uses of the craft by Native peoples through the exploration and the fur trade periods to the canoe's contemporary presence in advertising, music and recreation. Examining numerous building traditions, Raffan will draw upon the collection of the Canadian Canoe Museum to illustrate his presentation. He will also include information about Canton native and pioneering canoe-builder J. Henry Rushton.

Raffan is the author of some 15 books and has traveled throughout Canada by canoe, snowshoe, bicycle and many other means. He is also scheduled to speak at Clarkson University on the same topic, on Monday, March 29, at 4 p.m. in Barben Room B, Cheel Arena.
