JAMAICAN FILM, REGGAE PERFORMANCE SCHEDULED AT SLU

CANTON - A presentation by filmmaker Stephanie Black will follow
a screening of her film Life And Debt on Wednesday, October 23,
at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Hepburn Hall at St. Lawrence
University. The event, which includes a solo reggae performance
by Yami Bolo, is open to the public, free of charge.
Using excerpts from the award-winning non-fiction work
A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid, Life And Debt is a tapestry of
sequences focusing on the stories of individual Jamaicans whose
strategies for survival and parameters of day-to-day existence are
determined by the U.S. and other foreign economic agendas. By
combining traditional documentary techniques with a stylized
narrative framework, the complexity of international lending,
structural adjustment policies and free trade are presented in
the context of the day-to-day realities of the people whose
lives they affect.
Bolo, called "the freshest roots and culture artist
springing out of the pack in Jamaica today" has performed all
over the world. His singing style has been compared to "a cry
out in the wilderness, inspiring strength, joy and hope."
