A List 6/4/01 SLU PHYSICS PROFESSOR AWARDED RESEARCH GRANT CANTON -- St. Lawrence University Assistant Professor of Physics Catherine L. Jahncke has received a Cottrell College Science Research Opportunity Award from the Research Corporation, a foundation for the advancement of science based in Tucson, Arizona. Jahncke will use the award to study the effect of crystal size on the optical and electrical properties of barium titanate nano-crystals using a near-field optical microscope. Barium titanate is a material that has potential as a data storage medium that can be read optically and written electrically, without the need for backup memories or batteries. Study of size effects in these materials is crucial for current trends towards miniaturization to be successful. Her research will be conducted at St. Lawrence, with the assistance of undergraduate students, both during the academic year and in the summer. Research Opportunity Awards assist mid-career physics, chemistry and astronomy faculty in exploring new areas of research. Jahncke has been on the St. Lawrence faculty since 1995. She is a graduate of Auburn University, with a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University. Research Corporation was founded in 1912 by Frederick Gardner Cottrell, scientist, inventor and philanthropist, with the assistance of Charles Doolittle Walcott, secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. Its mission is to advance science by "providing means for scientific research and experimentation at scholarly institutions."-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
