SLU SLATES EVENTS CELEBRATING WORK OF CHARLES IVES

CANTON – In recognition of the 50th anniversary of the death of American composer
Charles Ives (1874-1954) – as well as the 130th anniversary of his birth – a number
of events have been scheduled at St. Lawrence University.
Ives wrote music at a time when the United States was looking both backwards
and forwards, a time when many people were debating the question of what might
constitute a unique and vibrant national culture, distinct from that of its
predominantly European settlers. His music likewise looks nostalgically upon the
past and boldly toward the future, and constitutes a unique American musical voice,
at times avidly experimental, at times wistfully sweet.
Events scheduled in the University's celebration of Ives' life and work
include:
	- The Laurentian Singers Family Weekend Concerts, in Gunnison Memorial
Chapel at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, October 1 and 2, include some pieces by
Ives.
	- On Saturday, October 23, Rebecca Lanning will sing the music of Ives,
Brahms, Gershwin and Tin Pan Alley composers, at 8 p.m. in Gilbert Recital Hall,
Griffiths Arts Center.
	- "A Concert of Psalms," performed by the University Chorus, will also
include music by Ives on Saturday, November 13, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 14,
at 2 p.m., in Gunnison Memorial Chapel.
The culminating event of the semester is "Take-Offs: Music by and Inspired
by Charles Ives," a performance by the Special Productions Ensemble in Gunnison
Memorial Chapel on Monday, December 6, at 8 p.m. Featured, along with works by Ives,
are world premieres of pieces by Christopher Watts, director of arts technology at
St. Lawrence; In-Sil Yoo, assistant professor of music at St. Lawrence; and Carolyn
Bremer, of California State University at Long Beach.
