Exhibition Of Inuit Prints In St. Lawrence University's Brush Gallery

CANTON - "Nipirasait: Many Voices, Inuit Prints from Cape Dorset," a collection of 36 contemporary Inuit art prints, will be on exhibition in St. Lawrence University's Richard F. Brush Art Gallery from January 24 to March 9. The exhibition, which had its debut at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC, in July of 2010, celebrates the 50th anniversary of Kinngait Studios of Cape Dorset, Nunavut.

Sandra Dyck, curator at the Carleton University Art Gallery in Ottawa, will give a lecture related to the exhibition on Monday, February 21, at 4:30 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center, titled "'Sometimes the pencil is stronger than I am': The Drawings of Shuvinai Ashoona."

Dyck's lecture and the exhibition are open to the public, free of charge.

The exhibition recognizes the creative spirit of the Kinngait Studios and those who have worked closely with the artists, north and south of the border. For well over a decade, St. Lawrence University has been collecting Inuit prints from Cape Dorset for the purpose of teaching and research. The works in the 2009 anniversary collection, including perspectives of Inuit artists young and old, offer an opportunity to appreciate traditional culture while looking to the future of contemporary Northern art.

Notable artists of all ages depict the power and beauty of the natural world, town and camp life, traditional Inuit stories and mythic creatures, and in more recent years, influences from across Canada. Their work illustrates a singular lyricism in its portrayal of humans and animals in their surroundings.

The Carlyle and Betty Barnes endowment fund at St. Lawrence provided support for the exhibition and its premiere at the Canadian Embassy Art Gallery in Washington, DC.
