SLU WRITERS SERIES BEGINS WITH INNESS-BROWN

CANTON - The 2002-2003 St. Lawrence University Writers Series 
begins Thursday, September 5, with an appearance by Elizabeth 
Inness-Brown, at 7 p.m. in Herring-Cole.
	A 1976 graduate of St. Lawrence, with a double major in 
fine arts and English,  Inness-Brown grew up in the North Country, 
graduating from Ogdensburg Free Academy. She earned her MFA in 
fiction writing at Columbia in 1978 and has taught writing at the 
University of Southern Mississippi, St. Lawrence, Purdue, the 
University of Hartford, Vermont College, and St. Michael's College, 
where she is a professor and director of the Writing Center. Her 
books include the story collections Satin Palms (Fiction 
International, 1981) and Here (LSU Press, 1994), and her first 
novel, Burning Marguerite, was published by Knopf in 2002.  She 
has received a Pushcart Prize and a National Endowment for the 
Arts fellowship.  
	Her reading will be preceded by recognition of and brief 
readings by the three winners of the 2002 St. Lawrence University 
Prize for Young Writers.
	Other writers scheduled in the series are Judith Ortiz Cofer, 
October 3; Janisse Ray, November 7; Afua Cooper, December 5; Heather 
Sellers, December 12; Ihsan Abdul-Rahiim, February 6; Alan Cheuse, 
March 6; Jane Hamilton, April 3; and Cyril Dabydeen, April 24.
