A List 2/26/01 INDIAN CLASSICAL MUSIC TO BE PERFORMED AT SLU CANTON -- A concert of music in the hindusthani classical tradition of North India will be performed at St. Lawrence University on Saturday, March 3, at 8 p.m. in the Gilbert Recital Hall, Griffiths Arts Center, by Ken Zuckerman, internationally acclaimed sarod virtuoso, and Anindo Chatterjee, equally acclaimed tabla player. The event is open to the public, free of charge. The sarod is a wood instrument, usually teak or mahogany, its belly covered with goatskin and an unfretted finger board of metal. It has 25 strings, seven of which are played with a coconut-shell plectrum, or pick. Zuckerman is one of the finest sarod players performing today. He is director of the Ali Akbar Khan College of Music in Switzerland. Chatterjee is among the top tabla players in India. He performs world-wide as a soloist, as well as accompanist to masters of Indian classical music. The concert is supported by the Birdsong Endowment for Music, established in 1999 to bring visiting musicians or musical groups to campus to enhance music education.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
