A List 7/15/02 SLU PROGRAM IN INDIA CANCELLED FOR FALL 2002 CANTON - The participants in the New York State Independent College Consortium for Study in India, including St. Lawrence University, have decided to cancel its program of study in India this fall, as a result of the U.S. Department of State travel warning, still in effect for the area. The decision was made July 12, following a teleconference by participants. Approximately 15 students had been planning to participate, including three from St. Lawrence. All students have been notified about the cancellation. The program was suspended following events of September 11, 2001. It was the only one of St. Lawrence's international study programs that was affected. The State Department's Travel Warning was issued June 26, stating, "This Travel Warning is being issued to alert Americans to the fact that the Department of State recommends that American citizens defer all but essential travel to India...military mobilization by the two countries [India and Pakistan] remains in place along the Line of Control and the international boundary. The risk of renewed high levels of tension cannot be ruled out. The Department of State authorized the departure of non-emergency personnel and all eligible family members on May 31. Those employees and their family members who departed India remain out of the country. The U.S. Embassy and Consulates continue to operate with only emergency personnel." Other colleges that participate in the consortium are Hartwick, Hobart and William Smith, Bard and Skidmore. The program takes place in the fall only; a determination will be made next year about its continuance in 2003.-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
