St. Lawrence Students Going Bald During Clips for Cancer
Several St. Lawrence University students will have shaved heads thanks to the Clips for Cancer event on Friday, February 15, from 2 to 5 p.m. in the Winston Room on the first floor of the Sullivan Student Center. The event, hosted by the Pre-Health Club, is open to the public to take part in or watch. The purpose is to support funding and research for childhood cancer.

Nominations are due January 25, 2013, for the 2013 North Country Citation awarded by St. Lawrence University. North Country Citations are presented to those members of the six counties of Northern New York (St. Lawrence, Lewis, Jefferson, Essex, Warren, and Franklin) who, through professional endeavor or personal example, contribute in special ways to improving the quality of life or fostering a sense of community in the region.

SLU Board Of Trustees Approves Site, Contractor For New Residence Hall
St. Lawrence University's Board of Trustees has accepted the recommendation of a committee of faculty, students, staff, alumni and trustees to build a new residence hall near the Noble Center and the Quad. The recommended site is one of three evaluated by the committee. The new building is expected to house 150 students and be completed for the fall semester of 2014.

Website Collects Students' Interviews From English Course
Students in the course Reading the American West, taught by Visiting Associate Professor of English Jill Talbot, interviewed a dozen people who either live and work in the west or write about the region, and have published the interviews on a website. Each student contacted a person currently living and working in the west, or a writer who has written about the west, in order to broaden their study beyond the classroom and the required fiction and nonfiction readings, film viewings and discussions. "Students were encouraged to interview individuals with whom they shared an interest," Talbot says.

Marc Delaney '13 Awarded Research Grant
Marc Delaney '13, of Clayton, N.Y., has been awarded a research grant by the Beta Beta Beta Foundation. A biology major with a minor in chemistry, Delaney will work with faculty mentor Assistant Professor of Biology Karin Heckman on a project studying cancer-fighting properties of lycopene, a substance found in tomatoes.

Latest Round Of Innovation Grant Awards Announced
An additional place to fill up a water bottle, iPads for students with special needs and a local currency are among the latest projects to be funded through the Innovation Grants program begun by President William L. Fox in 2010. The grants are awarded to encourage initiatives that will improve the quality of life at St. Lawrence through curricular, co-curricular or campus life projects and "provide a foundation for St. Lawrence's future."

Prof. Horwitz Gets Honorable Mention For Journalism Prize
Dana Professor of Economics Steven Horwitz received honorable mention in the Reason Foundation's 2012 Bastiat Prize for Journalism. The Bastiat Prize "celebrates writing that captures the spirit and creativity of Claude Frédéric Bastiat, a 19th-century French economist and classical liberal who used humor, satire and simplicity to make powerful cases for liberty and free markets that have stood the test of time."

Katie Greene '14 Gives Presentation To Historical Society
Katie Greene '14, of Essex Junction, Vt., gave a presentation at the St. Lawrence County Historical Association's Annual Meeting on November 3. The meeting focused on the region's role in the War of 1812, and Greene's presentation was on "The Capitulation of the Village of Hamilton."

Mathematics Honor Society Inducts 29 New Members
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science recently inducted 29 new members into the Mathematics Honor Society Pi Mu Epsilon. The University's chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon, New York Epsilon, was established in 1935. The national organization is "dedicated to the promotion of mathematics and recognition of students who successfully pursue mathematical understanding."

Five Students Participate In GEM Grad Lab At Cornell
Five St. Lawrence students, participants in CSTEP and the McNair Scholars program, participated in the GEM Grad Lab at Cornell University October 20, 2012. The workshop was part of an initiative through the National GEM Consortium, an organization designed to provide opportunities for underrepresented students interested in pursuing doctoral study in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

Anthropology Lab Becomes 'CSI/SLU'
It's lab day for students in Forensic Anthropology, taught by Visiting Assistant Professor Mindy Pitre. Students have to learn how to record and catalogue a site, as they would have to if they were involved in an anthropological dig. Many profs would lay down a grid on a spot of land and assign students a square, with plants, wildlife, soil, etc. making up the items on their logs. Not so with Pitre.

Event In NYC To Launch Journal Issue Guest-Edited By Prof. White
The publication of a special issue of Review: Literature and Arts of the Americas, with Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures Steven White as guest editor, will be celebrated at an event in New York City November 16, the culmination of a three-day symposium that features contributors to the journal. The journal is published by the Americas Society in New York and the issue centers on eco-literature in Latin America.
