A List 2/14/05 SLU GALLERY HOSTS CONTEMPORARY ART FROM SOUTH KOREA CANTON – "Incongruent: Contemporary Art from South Korea" will be on exhibition in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University from February 28 through April 2. An artist's lecture by Yong Soon Min will be on Tuesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center. It is open to the public, free of charge. The exhibition brings together works by eight artists from South Korea, plus Min, a Korean-American artist from Los Angeles. Two of the artists whose work is included are closely associated with Min Joong ("people's art"), a cultural and political movement of the 1980s. Their works are juxtaposed in the exhibition with pieces from five younger artists who work in conceptual and performance-based photography, videos and Web-based projects. Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Young Min Moon, exhibition curator, states, "The link between the generations lies in the artists' investigations of the visible and pervasive forces of modernity in Korea and in their critical reception of western cultures, as they examine the presence of the United States and scrutinize the division of the Korean peninsula. The works in this exhibition present South Korea's hybrid material culture as a direct result of international politics related to the Cold War and globalization, or more appropriately, what is known as glocalization." The exhibition is supported by a grant from the Freeman Foundation to St. Lawrence University's Asian Studies Initiative; the Jeanne Scribner Cashin Endowment for Fine Arts; and the Korean Culture and Arts Foundation.
