INCA SON, ANDEAN PERFORMANCE GROUP, TO APPEAR AT SLU
CANTON – Inca Son, an Andean musical group, will perform at St. Lawrence
University on Tuesday, October 14, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. The event,
part of the University's celebration of Latino/a and Hispanic heritage, is
open to the public, free of charge.
In addition to the performance, the members of Inca Son will also
offer a public lecture on Andean music and culture, on Monday, October 13,
at 4 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center, and an interactive
workshop on making instruments and making music, on Tuesday, October 14,
at 4 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, Room 107-108 in the Griffiths Arts
Center. Both events are also open to the public, free of charge.
Inca Son's purpose is to introduce audiences to and educate people
about the richness of Andean culture. The group presents traditional music
and dance of the Andes Mountains of Peru and Latin America in authentic
and colorful Inca attire. Every song and dance has a special importance,
meaning or background in Andean folklore, and each is briefly described
before being performed. Inca Son performs traditional songs, as well as
original compositions. The instruments that are used, with the exception
of the stringed instruments, are made by the musicians themselves.
