SLU STUDENTS COLLECTING BOOKS FOR 'TEACH FOR AMERICA'

CANTON - Answering a call from a recent graduate, students in
the English department honorary society at St. Lawrence University
are conducting a book drive to benefit the Teach For America
organization.
The group, the Irving Bacheller Society, have placed
drop-off boxes in the E.J. Noble University Center, Owen D. Young
Library and Brewer Bookstore on campus, as well as in the
Partridge Den, the Harvest Moon Cafe and Nature's Storehouse, for
the collection of donated books. All kinds of books are sought,
including textbooks, novels and leisure reading materials for
children in grades K through 12 and also for adults. The books
will be donated to Teach For America in the Mississippi Delta
region, where Eileen Fenn, a 2002 graduate of St. Lawrence, is
teaching fourth-graders in the program. Fenn contacted friends
and colleagues at the University to organize the drive. The
books, to be collected through November, will be distributed
to libraries and schools throughout the Greenville, Mississippi,
area.
Teach For America is the national corps of outstanding
recent college graduates of all academic majors, who commit two
years to teach in public schools in low-income communities. Over
the past 12 years, Teach For America has placed 8,000 corps members
in 16 rural areas. Through their efforts, more than one million
children have gained new opportunities.
