DRIVES, EVENTS ORGANIZED AT SLU FOR HURRICANE RELIEF
CANTON - A variety of events and efforts have been organized at St. Lawrence University to
assist organizations and areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. Among them:
- A Service of Compassion will take place Wednesday, September 14, at 6 p.m.
in Gunnison
Memorial Chapel, to remember victims and extend support to those affected.
All are invited to go to the chapel at any time to light a candle, share
a prayer request or
make a donation to the hurricane relief efforts.
- Re-New Orleans: Operation Enduring Kindness. The Radio Bob Band and friends will host
this event on Friday, September 16, from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Student Center, featuring
New Orleans-style food (andouille sausage, blackened chicken, red beans and rice and more)
and music. Cost to attend is $10 for adults, $5 for children under age 12 and $10 for
St. Lawrence students with meal cards ($5 will go towards the benefit). Performers are
The Tim Savage Jazz Quartet (5 p.m.), Hollywood Farm (6 p.m.), the Laurentian Singers
(6:45 p.m.), the Gospel Choir (7 p.m.) and the Radio Bob Band (7:30 p.m.). Proceeds
from the event will benefit Proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic.
- The rugby club team will hold a car wash at Stewart's on Route 11, Canton, on Saturday,
September 10, from 10 a.m. to and at Stewart's on Main Street on Sunday, September 11,
from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The rugby team is also sponsoring an emergency
supply drop-off at the Canton Farmers Market on Tuesday, September 13; Tuesday, September 20,
and Friday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The team also has a drop-off box for
emergency supplies at the Canton P&C.
- A panel discussion, with faculty addressing issues of race and class in the aftermath
of the disaster, will be held on Monday, September 19, at 7 p.m.; the location is to be
determined and will be announced when finalized.
A number of student organizations have also held or are planning fund-raising initiatives,
clothing drives and other efforts. For updated information, visit the
