SLU To Present Pulitzer-Winning 'How I Learned To Drive'

CANTON - Performances of Paula Vogel's Pulitzer Prize-winning play How I Learned To Drive will be at St. Lawrence University Wednesday through Saturday, November 4-7, at 8 p.m. in Gulick Theatre. Admission is free, but tickets are required. The play deals with mature subject matter and is not suitable for children.

How I Learned To Drive is about a woman who learns the rules of the road and life from behind the wheel. The story is recalled by a young woman growing up in Maryland, who comes of age in the 1960-70s. She receives driving lessons from her uncle, and that relationship - tentative and sexual - forms the underpinnings of a story that is mesmerizing, personal and disarmingly funny.

First produced in 1997, the play has won numerous awards, including the 1997 Obie in Playwriting, the Lortel Best Play Award, the Best Off-Broadway Play from the Outer Critics Circle, the Best Play from the Drama Desk, and the Best Play from the New York Drama Critics Circle, in addition to the Pulitzer for drama in 1998.

Director for the St. Lawrence production is Birdsong Professor of the Arts Rebecca Daniels, associate professor of performance and communication arts.
