BOOK BY SLU ECONOMICS PROFESSOR WINS AWARD

CANTON - A book by St. Lawrence University Associate Professor 
of Economics and Associate Dean of the First Year Steven Horwitz 
is the co-winner of the Smith Prize, given annually to the best 
book and best journal article in Austrian economics over the 
previous three years.
	Horwitz's book, Microfoundations and Macroeconomics:  An 
Austrian Perspective, was published by Routledge as part of its 
series Foundations of the Market Process. The Smith Center awards 
are made at the annual dinner of the Society for the Development 
of Austrian Economics, held during the annual meeting of the 
Southern Economic Association. The best book and article are 
chosen by a committee of three economists who are active 
contributors to the Austrian economics literature.
	A graduate of the University of Michigan, with a master's 
degree and Ph.D. from George Mason University, Horwitz has been 
on the faculty at St. Lawrence since 1989. A specialist in 
monetary theory and history, macroeconomics and political economy, 
he is also the author of the 1992 book Monetary Evolution, 
Free Banking, and Economic Order. Horwitz began a term as 
associate dean of the first year this fall.
