Remington Works Inspiration For SLU Gallery Exhibition; Local Students Assist
CANTON - "Horse Guts," an installation by the Kartoon Kings (Simon Grennan and Christopher Sperandio) based on the work of Frederic Remington, is in the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery at St. Lawrence University through October 11.
As part of the Kartoon Kings' efforts to include community members in their installation projects, teams of St. Lawrence University students, regional artists and students in Dianne Drayse-Alonso's classes at Ogdensburg Free Academy will hand-paint the artists' designs on the gallery walls. Sperandio will give a lecture on Thursday, October 2, at 7 p.m. in Room 123 of the Griffiths Arts Center; the event is open to the public, free of charge.
Since 1995, Grennan and Sperandio have collaborated to create comic books and art installations, often focusing attention on specific contexts, museum collections or communities. "Horse Guts" is a site-specific installation, which takes as its starting point works by Canton native Remington (1861-1909). Much has been written about the artist and his vision of the American West; for this installation, Grennan and Sperandio focus on Remington's pictorial interest in animals, namely the horse, and its depiction in many of his works as a tool of war - often an expendable one. The artworks typify 19th-century attitudes about the use of animals during times of war. Several of Remington's original paintings, drawings and rare prints from the University's Permanent Collection will be presented, along with works by the Kartoon Kings.
