A List 2/11/02 'HORN PLEASE' PERFORMANCE PART OF SLU ARTS FESTIVAL CANTON - "Conundrum," a performance by the musicians' collective Horn Please, will take place at St. Lawrence University on Friday, February 22, at 7 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre, as part of the University's Festival of the Arts. The festival's theme this year is "Remapping the Goddess: Global Visions," and the event is open to the public, free of charge. "Conundrum" is described as "an interaction between dhimay drummers and sounds drawn from field recordings and commercial recordings available in Nepal." Dhimay are large, barrel-shaped drums played in approximate unison by a group of drummers, accompanied by bhuchyah, or cymbals. Dhimay musicians appear often at public festivals in Nepal, and are called upon to honor female deities in particular. The members of Horn Please are St. Lawrence Visiting Assistant Professor of Music David Henderson, Visiting Assistant Professor of Music and Sound Technology Ben Sutherland and several University students, as well as people from the local community. They take their name from the words painted on the backs of trucks, tempos and other vehicles in Nepal. The St. Lawrence University Festival of the Arts is February 16 through March 7 and includes a variety of performances, exhibitions, lectures, discussions and other events, all exploring "the shifting representations and cultic practices of female deities in their own locale and in translation to other contexts."-30- Back To News Releases Back to St. Lawrence Homepage
